Bengaluru Rains: Infosys, Cognizant Employees Told to Stay Home? BJP MP Pushes for 2-Day Remote Work in India’s Silicon Valley

Bengaluru Rain: In response to severe rainfall in Bengaluru, BJP MP PC Mohan has urged IT companies to implement two days of remote work for employees. The city recorded its second-highest rainfall since 2011, with over 105 mm falling within 24 hours, disrupting daily life and affecting commutes.

Bengaluru: A BJP MP in Karnataka has requested two days of remote work for all employees of IT companies amid heavy rains in Bengaluru. PC Mohan, MP from Bengaluru Central, urged all companies of India’s Silicon Valley, including Infosys, to allow their employees to work from home as it poured heavily in Bengaluru.

“All companies in Bengaluru, including Infosys, must declare two days of work from home due to rains,” Mohan wrote on X.

Several IT companies have announced WFH and they are keeping an eye on the weather report to decide on whether to continue with remote work or not. On Wednesday, several IT companies, including Infosys allowed employees to work from home.

Bengaluru Hit by Second-Highest Rainfall Since 2011

Bengaluru recorded 105.5 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours between 8:30 am on May 18 and 8:30 am on May 19, marking the second-highest single-day rainfall since 2011. The downpour threw daily life into disarray, severely affecting commuters across the city.

Amid the weather chaos, IT services firm Cognizant has asked its 40,000 Bengaluru-based employees to work from home on May 20, according to a report by Moneycontrol. While Infosys, which already follows a three-day work-from-office model, hasn’t issued any formal advisory, many employees are believed to have opted to work remotely due to the severe weather.

Adding to the disruption, Bengaluru traffic police closed a section of Hosur Road, between Silk Board and Rupena Agrahara, from 9 AM to 11 AM on Monday due to waterlogging. The 9.9-km elevated expressway in this stretch was also shut down temporarily.

This corridor is critical for city traffic, especially for those travelling to and from Electronics City, one of India’s largest tech hubs, which houses giants like Wipro, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Siemens, and TCS.

Authorities have urged commuters to avoid Hosur Road and use alternative routes until conditions improve.
