NantBioRenewables has announced that its BioCal™ carbon-negative, compostable straws are finalists for the 2025 Reuters Global Sustainability Awards. These straws, made with Ocean Calcium Sand and part of the Wave Ware™ product line, demonstrate the company’s focus on sustainable materials. The recognition highlights efforts to support a transition toward a net-zero future.
Reuters highlighted all finalists in the Product Innovation Award category, showcasing advancements from AI to biodegradable innovations. NantBioRenewables is among finalists alongside companies such as Atoco, DuPont, Clarity AI, Ciclo Technologies, Zūm, Masdar, REN, UBQ Materials, Mercuria, and SCOR.
The company’s Wave Ware™ product line includes compostable straws, tableware, and cutlery, designed for durability and soil-friendly compostability. The products are developed with a focus on the full lifecycle, from sustainable sourcing to end-of-life composting. The company aims to replace microplastics with compostable bioplastics globally by 2030, emphasizing social responsibility.
BioCal™ straws incorporate Ocean Calcium Sand, a carbon-negative mineral, which helps reduce dependence on petrochemical plastics. During natural “whiting” events, these straws actively remove CO₂ from the atmosphere. Since their launch in 2023, over 84 million straws have been processed, and the product has achieved BPI certification.
Kenn Budlong, COO of NantBioRenewables, stated that the recognition reflects the company’s efforts and dedication. He noted that the innovative packaging aims to address environmental challenges and set new industry standards.
