18 cases reported, Labor Inspectorate: From January to now, 7 people have died in accidents at the workplace

In a public statement, the Central Labor Inspectorate said that since January, 7 people have died in the workplace. It said that other figures provided by unauthorized persons are inaccurate and create uncertainty.

This reaction comes after it was reported that 18 workplace deaths have occurred this year.

"While from January to today there have been 7 fatal accidents and this is the official figure from the Central Labor Inspectorate, all other figures given by other unauthorized and incompetent persons are not accurate and create uncertainty and misinform public opinion."

The Central Labor Inspectorate said that in the first six months, 4751 inspections were carried out, 788 fines were imposed, and 268 accidents occurred.

Full press release:

The Central Labor Inspectorate has received with deep pain and concern the news of the serious accident that occurred on July 21, 2025 at a workplace in the municipality of Gjakova, where two workers lost their lives as a result, and another person who had previously been injured in another accident at the workplace in Peja has also passed away.

On behalf of the Central Labor Inspectorate and in my capacity as Executive Director, I express my most sincere and deepest condolences to the families of the victims, sharing my pain with them in these difficult moments.

The Central Labor Inspectorate is committed with all its human and legal capacities to investigate the circumstances of this case and to hold accountable all those who have not implemented legal obligations in the field of occupational safety and health. We inform you that the entity where the accident occurred has previously been fined twice by the Labor Inspectorate for repeated violations in this field. This makes the fact that the appropriate measures have not been taken to protect the life and health of workers even more unacceptable.

Appeal for public and institutional awareness

Given that accidents in the workplace pose a serious threat to the lives of citizens, we publicly call on all employers, business entities and relevant institutions to take concrete and immediate measures to prevent risks in the workplace, in accordance with the Law on Occupational Safety and Health and the by-laws in force.

Invitation for cooperation and communication from the media

The Central Labor Inspectorate invites all media to contribute to general social awareness, through accurate information and the dissemination of sensitizing messages on the importance of preventive measures in the workplace. Only through sincere cooperation between institutions, businesses, organizations and the media, can we build a safe and dignified work culture for all our citizens.

The Central Labor Inspectorate will continue its inspection and law enforcement work with dedication to increase the level of safety in workplaces, in order to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

Continuation of institutional efforts for workplace safety

In the wake of continuous efforts to create a safer and more dignified working environment for workers in the Republic of Kosovo, the Central Labor Inspectorate has taken concrete steps to further strengthen its inspection capacities, through recruitment procedures for new inspectors.

In this context, a procedure was developed for the recruitment of 60 new inspectors, which was canceled by the Independent Oversight Council for the Civil Service of Kosovo.

Despite this administrative obstacle, the Central Labor Inspectorate has not stopped its efforts and is currently in the process of recruiting 59 new inspectors, in which procedure all candidate assessments have been completed.

With full hope and dedication, our goal is to successfully finalize the recruitment this time, in order to increase the presence and efficiency of inspectors in the field, and to significantly improve the supervision and implementation of legislation in the field of occupational safety and health.

Ps. Central Labor Inspectorate in the first 6 months:

1. Has carried out 4751 inspections

2. Has imposed 788 fines

3. There have been 268 accidents

While from January to today, 7 fatal accidents have occurred and this is the official figure from the Central Labor Inspectorate, all other figures provided by other unauthorized and incompetent persons are not accurate and create uncertainty and misinform public opinion.
