Dunedin robotics company Scott Technology Ltd is prioritising support and protection for the family of an employee who was killed in a “tragic” accident at the facility on Thursday.

A Scott Technology spokeswoman confirmed a serious accident had occurred, and one person died.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event, and our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.

“Our priority is supporting and protecting the family.

“We are working with police and other authorities to establish the circumstances of this tragic accident.

“Out of respect for the family and friends, we ask for privacy at this time.”

Scott Technology creates automation and robotic solutions aimed at transforming industries, by making businesses safer, more productive and more efficient.

It has design-and-build operations across New Zealand, Australia, China, Europe and America, where they make automated guided vehicles, and robotics for automated appliance manufacturing, meat processing, mining, and materials handling and logistics.

Emergency services were called to its Dunedin facility, in Kaikorai Valley Rd, about 3.45pm on Thursday.

A police spokeswoman said police were investigating on behalf of the coroner, and a WorkSafe spokesman said they had also been notified of the death and would be investigating.

The Scott Technology spokeswoman was unable to say if the facility would reopen on Monday.
