Unsecured portable ladder fell through uncovered opening into basement
Two construction companies have each been fined $168,000 for a Calgary work site incident that left a man with life-changing injuries.
Ihawk Construction Ltd. and its prime contractor, Utopia Construction Inc., pleaded guilty in Calgary Court of Justice on Jan. 16 to failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker, and of failing to establish a system or process to ensure compliance, respectively.
Both charges fall under the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and are related to an incident at a Calgary residential construction site on Jan. 2, 2023.
A worker was using an unsecured portable ladder next to an uncovered opening in the floor. The portable ladder slipped, toppled over and fell through the opening into the basement,” states a news release from Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.
“The worker suffered serious, life-altering injuries.”
Twelve other charges against Ihawk Construction were withdrawn, while 13 charges against Rajwinder Kaur as an employer, and two charges against Rajwinder Singh as a supervisor were also dismissed
Both companies have 30 days to appeal the penalties or convictions.
